Aj+C Architects Win Meriton Design Competition

21 July 2014

With the promise of a truly landmark building, Allen Jack + Cottier Architects has won the Design Excellence competition to design Meriton’s new project at Zetland.

The Meriton apartments at 84-92 Epsom Road will be adjacent to the government-led Green Square development, with the much-anticipated Gunyama public park, sports field and aquatic centre some of the precinct’s coming attractions.

We applaud what the City of Sydney is doing to lead the transformation of the Green Square area into a vibrant, design-focused and interesting part of our city, said Michael Heenan, CEO and Principal of AJ+C.

We are delighted to be working alongside Meriton to play our part in that process.

Featuring four buildings ranging in height up to 10 storeys, the AJ+C design encompasses more than 220 residential apartments; the Epsom Road site creates a defined street edge and will centre around a communal courtyard, while the north-facing Gunyama Park apartments will be less conventional, with an iconicù modular form arising from the site’s triangular shape.

The apartments have wide frontages to invite in plentiful natural light and will take in views from Green Square to the city. Commending the scheme’s elegantù approach, an independent judging panel found that it exhibited design excellenceù and would provide a positive contribution to the existing urban fabric in this important location.ù

Meriton purchased the site for $47.5 million in March 2014 from American defence aircraft company Goodrich Control Systems.
