Harry’s Ocean is to look down on ‘rivals’

HARRY Triguboff, after 40 years of developing high-rises on the Gold Coast, is heading to the top of the class – he is going to deliver the highest apartments in the city.

The 87-year-old Meriton group founder yesterday said Ocean, his possible finale in the tourist capital, would include penthouses that looked down on the highest homes in the Q1 and Soul super-towers.

He said Ocean, on The Esplanade in Surfers Paradise, would boast residences 243m above ground– or nearly 20 metres higher than the highest residential floors on the rival towers.

Q1’s presidential penthouse is at 224 metres, with the building’s top two floors occupied by the SkyPoint observation deck and capped by a 78-metre spire.

Soul, which is the second tallest completed building, has its highest occupied residence at 222 metres.

Mr Triguboff said he had not set out to make Ocean the apartment height leader.

“That’s just the way the project has evolved.

“The deeper we got into how to capitalise on a gem of a site and the stupendous views on offer, the taller Ocean became and the enthusiasm within Meriton grew.

“It’s exciting to think that apartments in our 76-floor tower will be the height kings.

“I guess that after developing 20 towers in the city, that will be seen as quite a legacy.”

Ocean, being built on a $58 million oceanfront site that previously housed a 22-level tower, is to be crowned by two super-penthouses.

The biggest, with a total area of 808sqm, will be priced at around $10 million and the other one, to be 650sqm, at about $7.5 million.

James Sialepis, the Meriton director of sales, yesterday said the larger penthouse would include a cinema room, bar and games room.

He said each of the penthouses would have large rooftop terraces and access to a private 10-metre by three-metre rooftop pool, possibly the highest swimming pool in the country.

“We’re not marketing the penthouses or the higher floors yet but that hasn’t stopped people stepping forward and registering their interest.”

Mr Sialepis said the two floors below the penthouses would contain eight sub-penthouses of between 190 and 263sqm and which were likely to be priced between $2.3 million and $3.5 million.

Construction of Ocean, due for completion in mid-2022, has reached level 20.

The tower is to include a Meriton Suites hotel in its first 33 levels and an exclusive Ocean beach club which will include a pool, daybeds and open lawn areas to unwind.

Mr Sialepis said only levels 34 to 57, which would have 238 apartments all with views, were being marketed, with 102 apartments sold and prices starting from $480,000.

“We expect Ocean’s first residents, those starting on level 34, to move into their apartments in late 2021.”
