Meriton gets behind Liverpool FC

Meriton is venturing on to new sporting turf – as a match-day sponsor for English Premier League club Liverpool FC in its May friendly match with Sydney FC.

Meriton for many years has been a major backer of rugby league team the Wests Tigers.

James Sialepis, the Meriton director of sales, yesterday said that the move into a new field and its partnership with Liverpool FC was recognition of the increase in participation levels and enormous fan base that football enjoyed in Sydney.

“Our city is very active, multi-cultural and a lot of our residents have football in their blood.

Football fans from across Australasia and from offshore are expected to descend on Sydney for what will be Liverpool FC’s first visit to the harbour city.

Meriton intends launching a major apartment project, The Retreat, which is being built directly across the road from match venue the ANZ Stadium, in early June.

The initial stage of the master-planned community will involve two elliptical buildings showcasing never-to-be-built out city views and will house the widest range of apartment choices, offering residents an opportunity to live, work and play next to Australia’s biggest recreation backyard.

Mr Sialepis said Liverpool FC and Meriton have similarities in terms of history and success.

“In that sense, we’ll be great partners on May 24.”

At the Sydney match 80,000 fans are expected to come together to sing Liverpool FC’s anthem, You’ll Never Walk Alone, when the team walks out on to the field at ANZ Stadium.

The game will be the closest match for the Reds’ to their 125th anniversary, which will be celebrated on June 3.

The club, which has more than two million followers in Australia, has included former players Steven Gerrard, Daniel Agger, Jamie Carragher and Steven McManaman in its Sydney line-up of past and present players.

Sydney FC, the Sky Blues, has enjoyed a stellar season which culminated in it defeating the Melbourne Victory in the A-league grand final at Allianz Stadium at the weekend.
