Meriton Group is working with One Steel, Australia’s premier manufacturer of steel products, to deliver a prestige 30-storey serviced apartment tower in the North Sydney CBD.
The project at 80 Arthur Street, designed by Tony Caro Architects, will be constructed out of structural steel (850 tonnes of it) in a first for an Australian high-rise apartment building.
The first structural steel columns will be erected on site in February, with the structure expected to be in place by the end of 2015. 80 Arthur Street will launch as Meriton Serviced Apartments North Sydney in early 2016, offering 218 short-stay serviced apartments and a retail space.
The streamlined design, considered to enable a faster pace of construction and more freedom of architectural expression, reflects Meriton’s willingness to pioneer innovative construction techniques.
“Steel appealed to me because it’s quicker than building with concrete”, said Meriton managing director Harry Triguboff.

The use of structural steel is expected to see 80 Arthur Street completed six months ahead of schedule.
“Structural steel framing offers significant benefits including enhanced speed of construction,” said Mark Lewin, General Manager, OneSteel Metalcentre, noting that steel innately contributes to sustainable built environments.
Notably, it’s infinitely recyclable. Coupled with steel’s inherent strength and durability, steel can extend the life of a building.
A glass façade will bring the property clear and crisp aesthetic appeal.
Tony Caro Architects described the glass tower as a crystalline and sculptural addition to the commercial skyline.
